GRL40C

Conquer Gravel with Confidence

The GRL40C gravel rim is designed with an asymmetric profile that enhances the strength and stiffness of the rim, making it an excellent choice for demanding off-road terrain. With a 40mm depth, the GRL40C is versatile and can handle a variety of terrain types. The 25mm inner width allows for a comfortable and stable ride with a wide range of tire sizes, making it ideal for both gravel and adventure cycling. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or just starting out, the GRL40C rim provides reliable performance, allowing you to ride with confidence on any gravel road.

Tire Interface

Hooked or crotchet refers to the shape of the rim flange. In this variant, the rim flange has a so-called hook. This supports the fixation of the tire bead and ensures safe function, also in high pressure use cases (>5 bar tire pressure). Tubeless refers to the ability of the rim to be used without a tube, but a tube set up is also possible.

Brake Interface

The reason for the trend towards disc brakes is a question of safety: disc brakes improve control. But what are the differences between disc and rim brake systems?

DIMENSIONS

Rim Height

In cycling, rim height significantly impacts the aerodynamics, agility and weight of the wheel. The general principle is the higher the profile of the rim, the greater the aerodynamic advantage; the lower the profile of the rim, the greater the response and better the handling when cornering and changing speed.

Rim Inner Width

Tires with different widths and profiles are used depending on the surface. The choice of tire width for the respective purpose in road cycling results in a recommendation for the rim inner width.

Rim Diameter

The 700c (622 mm / 29 inches) is the most common wheel size for road racing. The 650b (584 mm / 27.5 inches) wheel size is used in specific areas. Each wheel size offers unique advantages for different kinds of riding.

E.R.D / Effective Rim Diameter

The Effective Rim Diameter is the diameter of the rim at the location where the spokes make contact when they're laced to the rim. This measurement is crucial for building wheels because it ensures that the spokes are the correct length to properly tension the wheel and maintain its strength and integrity.

Here's why E.R.D. is important:

  1. Spoke Length Calculation: When building a wheel, you need spokes that are the right length to connect the rim to the hub. The E.R.D. is used in the spoke length calculation formula to determine the exact length needed. Using the wrong spoke length can lead to an improperly tensioned wheel, which affects its durability and performance.

  2. Wheel Strength: Proper spoke tension is crucial for the overall strength and longevity of the wheel. If the spokes are too short or too long, it can lead to uneven tension, causing the wheel to be weaker and more prone to flexing or breaking under load.

  3. Wheel Trueing: When the spokes are the correct length, it becomes easier to true (align) the wheel properly, ensuring that it runs smoothly and without wobbling or rubbing against the brake pads.

  4. Compatibility: Knowing the E.R.D. of a rim is essential when choosing spokes and hub combinations. Different hubs and rims have varying dimensions, so having the correct E.R.D. ensures that all the components work together seamlessly.

To measure the E.R.D., you typically use a special tool called an E.R.D. gauge. This tool helps you find the exact point on the rim where the spokes will lie. Once you have the E.R.D. measurement, you can calculate the spoke lengths and build a strong, reliable wheel that's suitable for your specific bike and riding style.

GRL SERIES' ADVANTAGES

The GRL series rims are designed specifically for gravel cycling, with both clincher and hookless options available. The asymmetric profile design on both the clincher and hookless versions provides improved strength and durability, while the wider inner width (25mm) allows for larger tire options and a smoother ride on rough terrain.

The clincher versions, including the GRL30C and GRL40C, feature a bead seat design that securely holds the tire in place. The 30mm and 40mm depths respectively provide a balance of aerodynamics and stability, making them ideal for gravel racers who want to maintain speed and control.

For those who prefer hookless rims, the GRL30S and GRL40S provide a similar level of performance with added benefits. The hookless design reduces weight and allows for lower tire pressures, which can improve traction and reduce the risk of pinch flats on rocky terrain.

Overall, the GRL series rims provide excellent options for gravel cyclists who demand high performance and durability in their equipment.
